Golfers loose shots on the putting green, both at club level and on the professional Tours. For years, perceived wisdom was that their aim was off. It wasn't. The putter was off.

Putters in the '90s hit the ball and lifted it off the ground. As the bottom of the ball shot forward it would hit the ground with a skid, and - no matter how accurately the player was aiming his winning stroke it would go in whatever direction its bum was pointing when it landed back on the green.

Sound improbable? It may sound silly, but pinpoint videography has proved the ball takes flight from the putter; sometimes only by millimetres, but that's enough to change the ball's direction. And if it's only by millimetres at point of impact, that can compound incrementally so that over a 20 foot putt, the ball can miss the cup by a yard.
