A fantastic weekend in Seville for Irishman Peter Lawrie, and heartfelt congratulations from the team at Yes! Golf on victory at The Spanish Open
Peter was sitting on -11 after 12 holes of his final round, and the chances of victory appeared remote. But some brilliant short game work produced four birdies in his last six holes and the 34 year old became leader on 15 under par. The Dubliner finished neck and neck with Ignacio Garrido, though, meaning they would have to retun to the 18th tee.
Garrido pitched on to just 3 feet from the hole, making a tense crowd of supporters hold their breath as Peter stepped up to attempt a monster 30-foot putt to draw level. But sink it he did, just off the left-hand edge of the cup, and so it was back to the 18th tee once again.
Peter found the bunker, but got himself out of trouble and landed his approach shot on the green. Garrido disastrously spun his approach shot, however, and it rolled back into the water. Lawrie two-putted to seal his maiden European Tour victory, and claim a £262,000 winner's cheque. The win also sees him climb from 88th to 12th on the Order of Merit.
"I had to regroup for the play-off, and ended up hitting one of the best putts of my life to keep myself in contention," beamed Lawrie. "It was a one in a hundred chance, and luckily it dropped on. I guess you have to get the rub of the green if you're going to win a golf tournament these days."
Peter does sometimes use another putter but he worked with Yes! Tour rep Phil Kenyon in Dubai last January, and the pair made some key adjustments at that time with the SA?M system - and demonstrably to great effect.
The Marilyn used by Peter is a mallet-syle face balanced putter with perimeter weighting. It has 340 gram head weight, standard loft of 2.5 degrees, lie 72 degrees as standard (2 derees flat or upright also available). The double bend steel shaft is heel-mounted, and three sight lines atop a titamium carbon finish make it one of the best selling Yes! mallets.
Another Yes! man - Englishman David Lynn - came tied fourth in Seville using a Valerie model which he's had in play since around the middle of last summer.
Edoardo Molinari and Mark Foster tied 22nd with their Yes! putters, but Foster has been doing extensive work with Kenyon at the newly enhanced Yes Putting clinic at Southport, and it showed....his position at number five in the putting stats for the Seville event show that clearly.
Yes! Putters were 3rd overall in the count at The Spanish Open with 24 putters in play. |
